My Project
Our students often do not feel engaged with the "classics". We are planning to implement independent reading of self-selected novels to help students with their engagement.
It is so important to build reading interest in students now so that they carry that interest into adulthood.
When students are able to self-select a text that interests them, there is a higher probability that student continue to read. Showing students diversity in high-interest texts will help them to feel represented in literature, plus they can learn about cultures that may be different from their own. This helps to build empathic students that turn into understanding and caring adults.
With a diverse selection in our Classroom Library, we want to show students that reading for interest is a continued habit to keep up. We also want to show them how learning communities can come together to discuss the importance of a selected text.
