I am a reading Interventionist for middle school age students. They want to read chapter books but often shy away from reading because it is a challenge. Graphic novels are perfect for independent reading. The pictures, style, and content catch their interest. They are not over whelmed by long pages. Part of the challenge is just encouraging students to pick, up a book and give it a try. Magazines also offer opportunities to read without overwhelming struggling readers. Comprehension and fluency can be focused on while learning. This is the beginning of my middle school classroom library.
