My Students

Our small public school is located on the west side of Chicago. Our students radiate with the vibrancy of the city of big shoulders. Enthusiastic readers, middle school students are allowed to visit the library and check out new books as soon as they've finished the last. Many times, students tell me they've enjoyed a book so much they've loaned it to a sibling and/or classmate friend. While this impacts the accuracy of my annual check out numbers, I am more than happy to know the true number is much higher than what the computer tally reports.

I am often stopped in the hallway with students expressing enjoyment for the books they've checked out and exclamations that they can hardly wait to get a new one.

The time browsing the collection is treated seriously as they look for that "just right" book and their determination to bring home books they'll enjoy.

As participants in the International Baccalaureate Program, our students strive to expand their horizons beyond our neighborhood and country borders, books help them travel even without a passport. For many students, this is the most convenient and accessible library and they are thrilled to make use of the resources.

My Project

Picture this: A team of laser-focused middle-school students reading, discussing and preparing for battle . . . Battle of the Books that is!

Every year across the City of Chicago, schools gather their best bibliophiles and join this highly anticipated event.

Each school is required to purchase at least one set of the 21 award winning books that each teammate will read. The books are passed among teammates, notes are taken, details are discussed and memorized. There is an exciting sense of competition and teamwork. An added bonus is that when the team is finished with the event, the books are included in the general circulation of the school and since they have been read by so many students already, their popularity is established and they become highly sought-after books.
