Help me give my students tools to explore the world around them microscopes!

My Students
I love teaching first grade---this year especially! I have a group of students that want to learn everything. Science has been the subject they are most excited about this year. It is assumed that younger students lack the attention span, reading skills, and dexterity to handle the subject matter where microscopes are used. It is my experience that not only is it possible to introduce first grade children to microscopy, but using the right approach, it is an activity that engages and excites them and is an unparalleled general introduction to science.
I feel strongly about the need to “plant the seed”—hoping it will germinate, if not in a science career, in a wonderful hobby—and perhaps a lifelong learning interest in science.
Above all, I want my students to know that children can and should see for themselves, and not just learn from second-hand or adult-mediated things like TV, computers, cell phones, magazines. I am dedicated to making that happen as often as I can, and with as many children as possible.
My Project
Microscopes, fuel a child’s curiosity and have educational benefits. Children can see the incredible complexity and beauty of objects we take for granted such as salt crystals and leaves. Microscopes open a window into lifeforms undetectable to the naked eye.
Microscopes make for a great introduction to the world of science and discovery and can fuel a lifelong passion for learning.
Children are naturally curious about the world around them. They have a million questions, are full of awe and wonder, and see things from their own unique perspective. Science is the way to open your child’s world even further. Using microscopes will allow me to teach them how to investigate and analyze.
