Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The auditorium is a very popular place in our school. Our students are eager to participate in instrument classes, musical performances and dance competitions. Many students sign up for our after-school arts programs. They not only develop performing arts skills, they also become empowered to participate in talent shows and assemblies.
Our school’s nearly 520 students from Pre-K to 5th grade are mostly English language learners who come from low-income homes.
The cultural make-up of our school is as follows: 90% Latino (Dominican Republic, Mexico, and Ecuador), 8% are African or African-American; and 2% are Asian or Polish. More than half of our students are part of after-school programs that allow them to be active, express themselves on stage, or develop their skills in reading, writing and math.
My Project
Are you a fan of 'American Idol' and 'America's Got Talent'? Well, our students are so talented, not one "BOOOO" has been heard in our auditorium. Without the proper audio system, great singers might not be heard. As the producer of for our student-run talent show, it is my pleasure to see all of the talent that is featured at our annual performance.
Our students are talented singers, dancers, comedians, poets and actresses.
Although it is an elementary school, I am often surprised at the 5th, 4th, 3rd, 2nd, and even 1st graders who take the stage like professionals! Students are given the opportunity to audition for stage time, then rehearse with a talent coach (a talented teacher) and finally perform in front of an audience of their peers, parents, and teachers. We are quite a few blocks from Broadway,; however, these young performers are ready for the spotlight. They are rock stars!
Nearly all students from low‑income households
