Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are energetic, enthusiastic learners. They have endless curiosity and are avid readers. They love to take on a challenge in any subject area but especially love to tackle STEM projects. They share ideas, encourage each other, and work together to achieve amazing results.
For my 2nd graders, learning computer programming is an outlet for creative problem-solving and an exciting way to acquire 21st century skills.
It is one of their favorite weekly activities and already has some of them thinking about careers in technology.
My Project
My students come from an economically disadvantaged neighborhood, but I want to give them the advantage of a strong foundation in digital literacy. The digital divide (the gap between students with access to technology for learning in their homes and those without access) has been shown to negatively impact students throughout their educational careers and needs to be narrowed to give my students a chance to compete with their more affluent peers.
My students are learning valuable 21st century digital skills in my class, but they need mice to more effectively use the classroom laptops.
Currently, they struggle with the built-in track pad and mice would be much easier for them to control. They are acquiring valuable skills in word processing, creating digital slideshows, graphing data sets in Excel, and learning to code to create their own programs. These skills will help them be successful in meeting the academic challenges that lie ahead for them. Having mice will help them meet these challenges with greater ease.
