Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Students in Introduction to Engineering Design go through real engineering design processes to develop their own products. A major part of this is creating three-dimensional computer models on professional quality software, Autodesk Inventor.
The 3,339 mostly (91%) Latino students in grades 9 through 12 attend our school at the southern tip of the city of Los Angeles.
Surrounded by several refineries and the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, the school serves a blue-collar, working class community with a substantially (70%) economically-disadvantaged population. The majority of our parents work for these industries and others in the Los Angeles industrial harbor vicinity.
My Project
While my students are fortunate enough to have access to laptop computers and professional quality design software, the integrated touchpads on the laptops are not well-suited to their design program. Without mice, they are unable to use many of the software's features, and are unable to truly experience a true-to-life design process. These mice will allow students to unlock the full potential of Autodesk Inventor and design products they will then manufacture. The storage cases will ensure that the mice remain in good working condition.
Students in this class are learning to be engineers and designers.
They are gaining knowledge of and interest in a career field that they might not otherwise be exposed to. By being able to create computer models, they are gaining experiences that many high school students lack.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
