My Project

Having a QBall in the classroom will make a tremendous difference in student learning by increasing engagement and fluency, and helping students practice their speaking skills and confidence - a necessary thing for today's society. While this will be beneficial for all students, this will also provide an additional support for my English Language Learner (ELL) students. According to Carnegie Learning, hearing text read aloud can support comprehension and fluency skills. Reading aloud, using the choral reading strategy for example, reduces the pressure of an English Language Learner to read perfectly and gives them an opportunity to hear words they might not otherwise know if reading silently to themselves. As with anything in teaching, the more engaging you can make something, the more likely students are to "buy in" to it and will tackle it with fidelity. That is my hope for this project; the QBall gives them a voice, literally, and would allow me to also gamify some aspects of an otherwise dreaded activity like reading aloud or presenting to the class.

My goal for this project is to see students grow into confident, fluent readers and speakers over the course of the year.

While we do read aloud even without a QBall, this would make it much more fun for the students and more likely to willingly participate and try, so that they can be heard through the microphone.

The students that will benefit from this project are special. They are hard workers that always try their best. Some students are still experiencing learning loss and lack of confidence in the aftermath of the pandemic and learning from a screen. We tackle this daily, but this is another method to increase their abilities. I just need assistance in making it a reality!
