My Project
We had our first Heritage Day two years ago, led almost entirely by one high school senior who made it her passion project. It turned out so well that dozens of students got involved with the planning and execution of it the following year. Now, looking forward to making this happen in our third year, we already have an increased number of committed, proud, creative, and energetic teenagers aimed at making an even greater impact on our school community in April 2025.
My students are the heart and engine of this project!
In our majority-white town, some kids feel othered, misunderstood, and uncomfortable in their own school. By dedicating a shining and celebratory spotlight on their diverse heritages through this full-day event, those students feel seen, not othered; appreciated, not misunderstood; proud, not uncomfortable. Unfortunately, we have no budget, so in the past student hosts have had to reach into their own family's pocketbooks to provide arts and crafts materials to design their "heritage booth" for the school population to visit during the day. Clearly, this is not equitable.
We will use these materials to assist in that need. Bold flags, tri-fold display boards, eye-catching art materials, crisp tablecloths, "passports" for the visitors to booths to get stamped, game materials for the hosts to engage their visitors and make learning about another heritage fun...all of these supplies will be equally distributed among the heritage heroes, benefiting our entire school! At a time when we still have microaggressions and hurtful stereotypes permeating our society and our hallways, it is our responsibility to educate and celebrate ALL kids. The best part of Heritage Day is that the STUDENTS are the agents of change.
