My Students
"Knowing how things work is the basis for appreciation, and is thus a source of civilized delight." (William Safire) Young children learn best from watching real objects and events, so they can learn from their own experiences.
I teach prekindergarten in an urban school district.
My students are all labeled by my state grant as "at risk", and come predominantly from low socioeconomic families. They often don't have as much exposure to science animals as other children in suburban and rural areas may have. My preschool children are in the final year before kindergarten. In this year, they are learning about the world around them, and learn from anything and everything they do - including their observations of the world around them, and the processes that occur in the world. Previous grants, and the grant that funds my program, have provided me with two aquariums I can use. However, currently these aquariums stand empty. The children would benefit greatly if they were able to observe life processes.
My Project
If this grant is funded, I will be able to place the tadpoles in the classroom, and show the children both how to care for animals, and how the animals change as they grow. The children will learn scientific concepts as they watch the life cycle progress, math concepts as they observe growth and make comparisons, and literacy concepts as they read and write about tadpoles and frogs. Although children can see many of these things in books or videos, they learn best by observing and interacting with objects that are real to them, not just a picture on a page or screen.
"Learn from yesterday, live for today, hope for tomorrow.
The important thing is to not stop questioning." (Albert Einstein) My dream for my students is to help them to not stop questioning. Donations to my project will allow my students the opportunity to see a metamorphosis that will allow them to question and learn.
