My students need to witness metamorphosis first hand with a class set of Painted Lady butterfly larvae that we can observe as they transform before our very eyes.
If nothing ever changed, there would be no butterflies.
As the students are approaching the end of their fifth grade year, they are undergoing great changes themselves. Some are quite nervous about the end of elementary school and the beginning of middle school. Plus it is Life Science.
My student are remarkable 5th graders who are approaching the end of this school year with excitement, anticipation and maybe a little fear of the unknown.
They are all headed to Middle School next year where I hope they will spread their wings and soar.
My Project
These butterflies will be used to reinforce the butterfly's life cycle and the stages of metamorphosis. This is a skill covered on the state's end of the year science assessment so reviewing in a hands on way will help the kids remember. Plus the kids love naming their own butterfly. We keep them on our desks while they grow and change, which is beyond exciting for the students.
I think watching the butterflies grow and change will help the kids to grasp that the world is an ever changing place so it is wonderful for them to grow and change too.
Maybe they can stop for a moment in this world of demanding curriculum and just enjoy the beauty of a butterfly.
