Merry Microscope for the Holidays

My students need a microscope (and oil) that can be used to observe bacteria, air particulates, and other small objects.

My Students

In my classroom, students are encouraged to move and ask questions. I strive to create opportunities for them to answer their questions through hands-on learning. One area that I struggle is being able to provide ample materials.

Our school is in a rural area, servicing roughly 550 students (and growing).

Most are of a low socioeconomic status. They truly are great kids that work hard. Also, many of my students want to go to college. They will be the first generation within their families to do so.

My Project

Having this microscope in my classroom will provide my students with tools and resources to boost their chances at success. The microscope will be used not only in my classroom, but also in my co-worker's room. There are many laboratories where this microscope would be needed. Furthermore, not only students this year, but in years to come would get the enjoy the microscope too. In one month I have students investigating bacteria and areas where bacteria grow. I want my kids to be able to see what bacteria look like using the oil immersion lens. Ultimately, I would like to have several microscopes, but one would be a great start.

I do not have the technology and tools I need to provide equitable opportunities for my students.

I want to support them in pursuing their dreams to attend college. The microscope does not make them more likely to attend college. However, it does help the students that want to study science gain experience with a higher-powered tool. This microscope will be a tool to help them answer their questions about Biology.
