it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My first grade students are excited about learning!
Most come from low-income families where reading and other educational materials are luxury items.
Additionally, our class contains children from diverse backgrounds and circumstances. Many come from homes where English is not spoken or not spoken fluently, some are in the foster care system, and some have physical and/or speech challenges to overcome. Fortunately, at this age, all students benefit greatly from experiences and touchable, movable manipulatives, so I try to provide these opportunities as much as possible. When you donate to our classroom, you are changing lives! Thank you!
My Project
In first grade, one of the most important things children learn is how to care for others —not only themselves. In my classroom we have had fish, frogs, snails, worms, and a toad. However, this last year (thanks to the generosity of donors like you) we were able to add a chinchilla. My students benefited greatly from interacting with this hands-on animal. In fact, Merlin the chinchilla has become quite popular all around school and receives many visitors each day. So, this project is for basic supplies needed to care for him such as food, bedding, hay, chew sticks, and bathing dust.
Having Merlin the chinchilla in our classroom provides my students not only the opportunity to practice caring for others, it allows them to interact with and gain first-hand knowledge of an animal on the endangered species list.
Having this personal experience greatly enhances my students’ understanding of animals and their adaptations and habitats, as well as brings to life the importance of conservation.
Thank you for considering sponsoring this project for supplies for our class pet. Merlin the Chinchilla has given many students at my school a unique and wonderful opportunity. I look forward to having him back again this next year.
