My students need picture books to use as mentor texts. Through picture books, my students will learn about the important traits they need to possess in their own writing.
Does a picture book you read/that was read to you as a child remain in your mind? If so, the author's words and the illustrations made a lasting impression. Picture books are ideal tools for teaching children what it means to be an author.
My students come to school eager to learn and with various levels of readiness, ability, and interest.
They are in the beginnings of developing strength as readers and writers. They are exposed to an environment that embraces individual differences, encourages risk taking, and actively supports them as they grow.
My Project
The picture books requested have been specifically selected to use as mentor texts for teaching writing. Texts were selected to teach the following traits of writing: ideas, organization, conventions, voice, word choice, sentence fluency, and presentation. It is important for children to begin developing these traits as young writers, and picture books are rich examples of authentic writing. The enjoyment, emotion, and connections developed through a child's exposure to picture books will leave a lasting impression. Rest assured that the picture books requested will be read, reread, and loved as they become models of the possibilities students have for their own writing.
Children do not learn best what it means to be a good writer through the use of worksheets and textbooks.
This is best learned through the examples of authors and repeated opportunities to explore and experiment with an author's techniques in their own writing.
