Mentor Texts to Make Reading Memorable

Help me give my students mentor texts to teach all of the reading standards more effectively and to help engage them more in learning. The more engaged they are, the better readers they will become!

My Students

I teach 17 wonderful third grade students! My students come, primarily, from low-income households. Our school has a 92% poverty rate and 100% of our school receives free breakfast and lunch. Students will come to me with a wide range of abilities and interests. They often come to me lacking background knowledge and almost all students started the year 1-2 years behind grade level in both reading and math. The growth they have shown is tremendous! One of the ways that I am able to help my students show growth in learning is by providing a wide variety of activities to help reach the various types of learners in my classroom.

I am my students' biggest cheerleader and have high expectations for their success!

My students continue to amaze me every day with their eagerness and excitement to learn.

My Project

These books will help my students be more engaged and excited about reading. The majority of my class is 1-2 grade levels behind in their reading comprehension at the beginning of each year. By creating more engaging and interactive reading lessons, I believe I will be able to help close this gap in my students' reading comprehension.

In order to help my students become life-long learners, I need to help their reading comprehension grow; and these books are just the thing they need!

Mentor texts provide quality text in engaging picture books that help students gain exposure to a variety of text styles and genres. By providing this high quality of instruction, students will be able to apply what they are learning through these texts to other texts.

In the state of Florida there is mandatory retention for third grade if students do not score proficient on state tests. I strongly believe these mentor texts will help students learn and apply better reading strategies through all of the texts they read, including the state mandated testing.
