This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are a diverse group of 4th and 5th graders. Some students love reading, and some love writing. It's exciting when students love both! Unfortunately, there are students who lack interest in reading, writing, or both. Then, there are those students who tries, but struggle in reading and/or writing. Those students need motivation and encouragement. Our school promotes reading through Raz Kids and Accelerated Reader. My students also go to the school library twice a month. Even though our school tries its best to promote literacy, it is my desire to make sure that every single student in my class acquire the love of reading and/or writing in every way possible.

My Project

Mentor texts are critical in teaching reading and writing. Not only do the stories engage students, but it also helps improve their fluency and comprehension. By reading and discussing mentor texts, students will gain strategies they can implement when they are reading on their own.

Mentor texts used during interactive read-alouds will provide deep understanding of theme, characterization, and other crucial components in reading comprehension.

It will also assist struggling and hesitant writers by providing examples and ideas on how to go about writing different genres. Mentor texts will not only serve as a guide and help with proficiency, but it will also spark the love for reading and writing.
