Help me give my students thirty-six mentor texts that help introduce, teach, and reinforce reading skills students need for the remainder of their literacy careers.
During our English Language Arts block we are focusing on the enjoyment of reading books we love because we love them. We stack our shelves with a wide variety of books with the goal to entice every reader. The majority of my students are reading a mix of novels, nonfiction, and graphic novels, but what we would love more of is picture books.
I love watching them light up when I read a picture book to introduce, demonstrate, or solidify a topic.
That moment you look at them while they go "oh!" I have yet to have a class that doesn't enjoy a read aloud. I have found great mentor texts that would help create a cohesive lesson plan, as well as give students hands on reading in centers and print base experience!
My Project
The application of reading skills can be taught through an engaging mentor text. Each mentor text selected demonstrates at least one reading skill. Figurative language, text structure, main idea, theme, inferring, story elements and point of view are all skills that need to be carried through a students literacy career.
Each book selected provides a new story, a different genre, and interests readers of both non-fiction and fiction.
For example, "Tricky Vic" is a book about a man who sold the Eiffel Tower. "Tricky Vic" by Greg Pizzoli helps students with chronological order with an emphasis on signal words used to let the reader know a new step is starting. The books chosen for theme include a variety of hardships and how to over come them. They teach morals that should be embedded within the classroom.
A few extra books added include stories about the boats that helped during 9/11. We are officially teaching students the history of this catastrophic event in America.
