Mentor Text For Writing Instruction

My students need 30+ non-fiction mentor texts to help them learn how to write expository texts.

My Students

Many students struggle with writing expository texts. They have not had much practice in this genre.

I work with struggling writers who need clear examples of strategies that will improve their idea development and organization of their nonfiction writing.

Using these diverse texts to model different strategies, such as beginning with a comparison and adding descriptions to support their reasons, student writing will improve.

My Project

My students need non-fiction mentor texts to help them learn how to write expository texts. These nonfiction mentor texts were recommended from Dorfman and Cappelli's book "Nonfiction Mentor Texts." The selection supports instruction in writing introductions, conclusions, supporting details, point of view and the ever challenging, developing author's voice.

This project is important because we need more nonfiction resources to support the Common Core's expectations.

Thirty-five percent of our reading and writing must be nonfiction. Having these resources would help aid in achieving that goal.
