Help me give my students socio-emotional thumballs, self-esteem building games, and other mental health resources to keep them motivated, driven and supported throughout the upcoming school year.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Counseling middle school students has been a challenge but it's been the best challenge I've ever taken on. My students are some of the most astounding kids I've ever met. They're phenomenal, brilliant and curious boys and girls with amazing futures ahead of them.
Self-Driven, courageous, committed and unique are just a few of the character traits they offer; they have that "tell me that I can't and I'll show you that I can" mindset.
Growing up in the South Bronx, my students have fortunately and unfortunately lived vicariously through the lives of others in their surroundings. They continue to gain insight all while learning how to "survive in the hood" in order to "make it out of the hood" as young adults. With this fearless mindset, they have become some of the most determined, sympathetic and confident young people I've ever encountered.
My Project
In today's world, each student is in need of as much mental health support as possible. As a School Counselor, I am constantly trying to provide adequate support for my students while also teaching them tools and skills for them to acquire to use on their own. Each resource on my list provides the student with motivational support, mindfulness tools, brain breaks, and more.
Not every child knows how to ask for help when it comes to mental health simply through the use of conversation.
With games and workbooks such as Conquer Negative Thinking for Teens, Totem the Feel Good Game, and You Know Social Skills Game, my students will be able to identify some of those triggering feelings that often holds them back. These items target areas such as self esteem, anxiety, depression, suicidal ideation, stressors and more. By digging deeper through the use of role playing and action oriented games/activities, I am hopeful that my students will gain insight as to the growing teenagers they are becoming. Items such as "Shaped by Our Past" thumb ball and "Learning Resources Conversation Starters" will allow the students to break the ice and eventually feel comfortable to speak up about their worries and troubles.
A Counselors space is also very important when it comes to making the child feel comfortable and welcoming. By having bright inspirational messages on furniture for them to focus on when they're feeling unmotivated eventually gives their mindset a positive turn around.
The mental health goal is always to love yourself, think positive, raise awareness, etc. By having the suitable tools to promote mental health awareness, each student will have the opportunity to successfully build their mental health in their upcoming school year.
