This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

This project consists of carefully selected books and resources to help children's mental health as they navigate through uncharted times, where life is unpredictable and so many things are out of our control. My experience this school year (2021-2022), our first year back in-person since the pandemic, has been challenging to say the least. I've experienced kindergarten students who are so inept at dealing with their feelings and fears, that they have difficulty functioning in the classroom. I attribute this to the turbulent changes that the pandemic caused for families.

After completing our first "normal" year of school post-pandemic, it is evident how desperately our young learners need to build emotional intelligence: coping skills, resilience, anger management, mindfulness, effective communication strategies, and empathy.

For a five year old, their entire living memory has existed during the pandemic, with tired, anxious, overly stressed parents, less social exposure and experience, limited access to in person preschool and day care, more time screen time, and constantly changing school experiences. This project will provide my class with materials to help them navigate in positive ways through the challenges life brings.
