This project will fund alternative seating for my students in their Studio Art courses. We have inclusive classrooms that often include students with mental health concerns on a medical level, but also every student in high school is going through something. Mental health is a major part of personal care that often gets overlooked. My classroom is one that strives to be a place where every student can feel comfortable and engaged. Even one class a day that allows them to relax could be the difference between enjoying school and struggling through the day. These chairs will be part of an alternate seating area of the room for students.
Flexible seating has been proven to aid students' physical and mental health including increased metabolism, increased oxygen flow to the brain, and increased motivation and engagement.
After many years in the classroom, I’ve observed that providing choice increases engagement, promotes ownership, and reduces classroom behavior issues. Especially in the art room, where personal choice is so important, students deserve the ability to move around and find a set-up that helps them create.
Currently, we have to rely on the uncomfortable stools provided. With these more relaxed options, such as saucer chairs, students will have the chance to relax while doing computer work or worksheets. Our alternative art room strives to be one where students are given every chance to create to the best of their ability without the limitations of the "traditional" classroom. This project will be a big step toward building an art room full of student choice and especially create a new level of educational equality for our students with
