Help me give my students a focus on mental health through sewing! We will use our sewing machine to learn to self care techniques through sewing, caring for our clothes, and creating objects of care for others.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I'd love to help my art students focus on mental health through sewing! We will use our sewing machine to learn to self care techniques through sewing, caring for our clothes, and creating objects of care for others.
Following the age old tradition of sewing circles as a place of comfort and mental health, students will reflect on their comforting experiences with sewing and textiles.
This could be reflecting on family members who sew, comforting textiles such as baby blankets or stuffed animals, and any memories associated with the craft. The sewing machine will help make this lesson more accessible to students with motor difficulties, as well as students who are more comfortable with machine sewing.
We hope to create a quilt of comfort, where each student is able to create a square of this quilt based on something that helps their mental health. This will assemble into one large class quilt that students can use throughout the year.
