Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I am very excited to be helping to start a gender and sexuality alliance (GSA) for middle school students.
According to the Trevor Project, there are alarming statistics regarding the mental health of queer youth, including:
-Nearly 2 in 3 LGBTQ young people said that hearing about potential state or local laws banning people from discussing LGBTQ people at school made their mental health a lot worse
-Nearly 1 in 3 LGBTQ young people said their mental health was poor most of the time or always due to anti-LGBTQ policies and legislation
-Roughly half of transgender and nonbinary young people found their school to be gender-affirming
I hope to provide a joyful and affirming space for LGBTQ students. The books, art supplies, and games requested will be tools to help club members celebrate who they are, connect with one another, and feel seen and supported.
