My Project
My goal for this project is to provide multiple modalities for students to experience, express, manage, and appreciate their emotions throughout the school year.
Engaging the five senses - touch, sight, hearing, taste, and smell - is a terrific grounding method for students in the classroom.
Mindfully activating these senses can also be used to express and regulate emotion in a healthy way.
I am a science teacher and understand the stress that students experience having to attend, study for, and perform for a difficult core class - especially when they're already having to navigate the craziness that is teenage life!
TOUCH! The bendy axolotls will help students who need to fidget and the calm strips will help ground students who need extra stimulation. SIGHT! The wall tapestry will reduce student stress when they gaze at the nature scene. HEARING! The drum will engage students' sense of presence (I already have a chime in my classroom and a few students have mentioned how it hurts their ears. This handpan has a richer, warmer sound, which will account for those students). TASTE! The mints engage students' taste and provide a cooling sensation which helps reduce elevated emotional states. SMELL! The collection of essential oils will be used in a diffuser to help students relax and breathe.
