This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
When you are trying to simply survive in an urban school, it is hard to find time to create positive memories.
Despite their hardships, my students have a passion for life that may exceed those who don't face the same hardships.
They must work hard for their few rewards and so they tend to hold them dearer than someone who is handed them. Odd as it seems, even my "hardest" students often find expression in music and poetry.
My Project
My students need a digital camcorder, tripod, storage and drive to burn DVDs for personal copies of their poetry slam performances. Last year we held our first poetry slam. We were unsure how something often viewed as elitist would go over in our community, but we were rewarded with 25 poets and more than 100 people from the community in attendance. We hope to expand our influence this year by reaching out to more community organizations and media outlets.
While this certainly will result in more positive exposure for our students, what we would love to do is be able to give them a permanent memory of the event, including their reading, the audience's response, and the performances of their friends and classmates. By filming the slam and giving each student their own copy of the DVD we will be giving them a lasting memory of their time in school beyond the struggles they faced - and overcame.
Please help make these students' time in school one which they can look back on and show their own children in the future as a positive one; a time when first everyone thought they were going nowhere and then they showed they could go anywhere!
