Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students come from a predominantly low income school located in Santa Ana, California. We are a charter school focused on personalized learning, so our teachers and students have to get creative and find new ways to show what they've learned using resources in the classroom. Our school serves students with a range of disabilities and various academic levels.
This year our school has switched to multi-age classrooms so my classroom consists of students in Transitional Kindergarten, Kindergarten, and 1st grade.
These are students who either have not ever been in school before or have a couple years under their belt. Kids ranging from 4-7 years old require a wide variety of resources in order to become their own best learners.
My Project
This year our school is focusing on finding ways to improve our math scores across grade levels. The math manipulatives we are asking for will allow students to practice hands-on math skills including number sense, addition, subtraction, place value, patterns, sorting, etc. while at home with their parents. These activities will help bridge the gap between home and school and keep parents informed about their child's abilities.
Math take home kits will allow students and parents to work together and create memorable math moments at home while practicing important skills.
Each kit will be prepared based on what students need to practice and will be sent home for parents and students to work together. My students are hands-on learners who prefer interactive activities and projects as opposed to homework based solely on worksheets. The math manipulatives in each kit can be used in different ways to practice a variety of skills and will allow students to be creative with showing their learning and working towards mastery. Our goal is for each student to be able to practice each standard in an interactive way when they are outside of the classroom by providing resources and manipulatives that they enjoy using in the classroom, and sharing those with their families at home.
