My Students
I teach in a Title I middle school. My students all have some learning disability or other impairment that interferes with their success in school. Approximately ten percent are English Language Learners.
My students need resources to help them access their academic curriculum.
In addition to neurological or other inherent deficits, my students often lack confidence or the internal drive to be academically successful. Learning is a challenge for my students. External supports, encouragement, and reinforcements are not only required for them to learn, but also to realize that they can make achievements.
My Project
My students do a great job listening and observing the model lesson. When it is their turn to work, however, they become anxious and unmotivated.
Comfortable seating and "just right" books help them WANT to read and WANT to do their work.
They feel "special" when they are able to sit in a special chair. The new books and seating will create an environment that is conducive to performance. When they are able to read the book and enjoy their time, they will want to read more. Being a strong reader is the number one characteristic of successful people.
My students can be successful. They just need a little extra encouragement. Sometimes, they even need something to do with their hands that will "free" their minds to work. This is where the fidgets can really help them get over the hump!
