My students are part of a Gifted & Talented Spanish Dual Immersion program in a high poverty neighborhood. Half of them are native English speakers and half are native Spanish speakers.
Their goal is to leave elementary school, not only speaking two languages, but also reading well and writing properly in all academic subjects.
Despite coming from economically disadvantaged families, these students have worked hard to earn their place in this program. They are the cream of the crop at our school and help to set the bar for the rest of the students. Helping our dual immersion students is to ensure their success as future bilingual leaders in our community.
My Project
Students will use simple voice recorders to practice reading with fluency and feeling. They will be able to play back their own voice and improve their grammar, rate of speech and pronunciation.
Practicing presentations with a voice recorder will help students to feel more confident getting up and presenting in front of the whole class.
Students will be able to interview classmates or members of the community as they learn about Hispanic culture, science, and social studies topics throughout the year. Recording interviews will help them to review and transcribe exactly what was said.
Many students at other schools have access to voice apps already on their smart phones, but my students are 10-year-old kids at a Title 1 elementary school. Hardly any of them have a cell phone.
More than half of students from low‑income households
