My Students
Many students enter kindergarten having never been a student before. While they take time to learn about and explore the ideas of school and learning, I am spending time learning about them. I observe many different types of learners in my classroom each year who have many different needs.
The students in my classroom have a wide range of experiences with technology.
But the one common thread between them all is that they all LOVE to use it. We have a very high EL population, as well as many students living at or below the poverty line. Many students at our school are learning to speak English, learning to acclimate to a different culture, or are dealing with a family or living crisis at home. We try to make every minute that they are at school as safe, meaningful, and full of learning as possible for these students so that they are excited to come back to school everyday and learn!
My Project
iPod Touches in the classroom provide endless learning opportunities for students. The activities available can be easily tailored to meet each individual student's needs, whether it is learning letters or reading multi-syllable words. I am requesting three iPods so that they can be used in small group settings and individually. These devices can be used in all subject areas - reading, math, writing, phonics, phonemic awareness, science, health, and more! The best thing that I have noticed about using technology in the classroom is that it really engages the students. They are constantly interested in what is happening and what they are learning.
A problem that I often face is having the time and appropriate resources to give individualized instruction to specific students who may not be meeting expectations in one or more academic areas.
Activities on the iPod Touches will give these students the opportunity to work on these specific strands and be excited about the work that they are doing!
