Meeting Sensory Needs in the Classroom

My Students

My students are special because they are smart, creative, inquisitive and passionate. My students are also special because they have special needs. Their needs range across a large spectrum. However, almost every one of them can benefit from sensory items.

Unfortunately, our school does not have a dedicated sensory room that is open five days a week, all school day long - I'm hoping my room can play a role in changing that.

Our school is overcrowded, and every room is constantly in use. The only room with many sensory items is regularly closed for use in Occupational Therapy sessions. I see the effect that sensory needs have on many of the kids I serve. I wonder how much more engaged a child they might be if their sensory needs were met regularly. Many of these children come from broken homes as well as from dire financial situations in the foothills of Appalachia. I hope to show them that what they need is within reach, no matter the finances of their family, the address on their home or the disability written on a piece of paper with their name on it.

My Project

This school year I was given a crash mat for my room to help meet a need for one of my students. What I didn't expect was the reaction of nearly all of the students who entered my room. They all wanted to "crash" into the mat. Granted, who doesn't love a good jump into a crash mat? However, it opened my eyes to one simple fact.

Most of my kids have sensory needs that aren't being met.

Some of them had OT therapy once a week. Yet, I saw these kids once a day. With valuable input from the Occupational Therapist, my room could provide a piece of the solution to these kids' needs. Next school year, the OT & I will create a section of my room devoted to meeting sensory needs. If this project is successful, I hope it can be helpful to not just OT & Special needs students, but any student in the school who has sensory needs or needs a sensory break.
