Meeting Our Families' Essential Needs

Help me give my students and their families essential supplies to stay healthy at home and support both at-home and in-person learning.

My Students

A neighborhood elementary school, our school provides students a high-quality education that emphasizes 21st-century skills and prepares students to be real-world leaders and innovators. Designated a welcoming school in a community hit particularly hard by the nation's largest school closing six years ago, we are a fixture in West Englewood with families attending the school for generations and regularly volunteering at the school. We are a hub for parent and family resources, hosting many Parent University events, from resume writing to college tours.

Our staff is committed to equity, ensuring that, although nearly all of our students are low income, they have access to as many resources and opportunities as possible.

We have a nationally competitive chess team that recently placed fourth in the nation, a vibrant arts education program, hands-on STEM projects at every grade level, leadership programmings such as our student voice committee and bully-blockers program, cultural trips that take students all over the country, and school-wide social-emotional lessons integrated into the curriculum. It is through the extraordinary efforts and fundraising of staff, parents, and the community that these initiatives are possible, despite budget constraints.

My Project

Since our school closed due to COVID-19 over a year ago, we have been able to support our students and families through home visits and care packages to make sure that they have everything they need to weather this challenging period. Most recently, we provided care packages thanks to Donors Choose funders with self-care items to accompany the self-care lessons we are teaching in the classroom and through groups. They have been a huge hit and have helped a lot of students and their families cope during remote learning.

Now, our families have voiced a need for PPE, cleaning supplies, and general household supplies.

Specifically, we are seeing a need for hygiene products, healthcare items, cleaning and sanitizing tools, a few general household supplies, and masks for adolescents and adults. Many families are still struggling to get their basic needs met, which makes it that much more challenging for students to be engaged and successful at school. With your help, we would like to lift some of that burden while building community by providing more care packages with items tailored to the requests we have received.
