I serve students in a self-contained, autistic support classroom. The students in my class have diverse needs and require a high level of structure and evidence-based instruction and behavioral supports in order to achieve full potential. They come to school each day ready to be challenged to reach for the next bar, which looks different for each of them. Some of my students are learning to write their names. Others are learning names for common objects like shoes and pencil. Still, some others are working at-grade level and trying his or her very best during their inclusion time with their same-aged peers in regular education.
The students in my classroom deserve materials unique to their learning needs.
Each DonorsChoose.org project is selected with this in mind. A lot of times, the materials accessed through generous donations wouldn't be otherwise available to these students in any setting. For them, the materials we have in our classroom make a big difference!
My Project
Our classroom centers around providing appropriate, individualized instruction for all students. The students in our classroom have diverse needs and all have a primary disability category of autism. Some of these materials are instructional - students work on prepositions or number concepts such as counting. Others are to provide structure and clarity in the classroom - borders, seat sacks, and labels. Our approach focuses on the whole individual. When these needs are met, student learning is profound.
Our students need the routine of an appropriate education to be successful now and to prepare them for success later in life.
These materials address many needs of many students, including those that may receive instruction remotely or homebound instruction. They provide the foundation and enhancements to their classroom environment that promote their success.
