Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
The items I’m requesting—such as healthy snacks, toiletries, blankets, and engaging prizes like an arcade game—directly address barriers to student success. For many of our students, basic needs like food and hygiene are not always met, which makes it difficult to focus on learning. Snacks and hygiene products ensure students feel cared for and ready to engage academically. Incentives like prizes, raffle rewards, and experiential opportunities motivate students to improve attendance, participate actively in class, and build habits that will help them succeed long-term. These small but meaningful interventions also foster a sense of belonging and joy at school.
What are your goals for this project?
The primary goals are to:
Increase attendance in class by 90%.
Improve Attendance: Reward students for being present and on time, helping us tackle chronic absenteeism.
Promote Positive Behavior: Reinforce our school expectations of being safe, responsible, and respectful through incentives like Bear Bucks and recognition.
Support Social-Emotional Wellbeing: Provide basic essentials like snacks and toiletries to reduce stress and ensure students feel valued and seen.
Create Joyful Learning Experiences: Through incentives, activities, and engaging opportunities like the student store, I aim to inspire students to see school as a positive, supportive space.
What makes your students special?
Our students at MHS are incredibly resilient and resourceful, navigating challenges that would discourage many others. A large number of our students face high needs, including homelessness, food insecurity, and family responsibilities. Despite these challenges, they show up, strive to succeed, and look out for one another. Their strength, individuality, and creativity make them special. They deserve a school environment that acknowledges their hard work and ensures they have the tools and opportunities to thrive, both academically and emotionally.
