Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Have you ever heard these statements? These are boy toys! Those are girl toys! Girls are better at this and boys are better at that! These statements are antiquated and untrue, my goal is to teach my students that coding is for everyone. I would like to get more female students involved with coding.

I work with a large culturally and linguistically diverse group of learners.

I work with students with autism, specific learning disabilities, speech and language impairments, and students who may benefit from small group interventions. Close to 90% of students are eligible for free or reduced lunch, and about 60% of our students are English language learners.

My Project

By using the Sphero and Ozobots my students will learn how to program and enhance their higher level thinking skills. Coding is the language of computers and by teaching them coding, it will challenge my students to do STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) related activities. It is important that our future female programmers learn these skills at an early age. The students will be able to use apps on the tablet to program the Spheros and Ozobot robot to do different tasks. The students will learn how to create mazes and program the robots to get through them, along with exploring area and perimeter. My goal is to inspire females at our school to seek careers in science, technology, engineering, or Math. The books will help my students understand who Malala is. She was taught to stand up for what she believed in and fought for her right to be educated when she was ten years of age. This will be empower my female students, that they too can make changes like Malala.

By providing girls with opportunities to code, they will be more likely to take computer classes in the future.

It is my hope that we can make a small difference in a few girls lives, that will eventually lead them to ideas and innovations that will make big changes in their future.
