Meet Me in the Morning

My project needs 1 easel, that will be accessible for children to actively interact with during our morning meeting, 1 pack of chart paper, and 2 packs of post-it notes to write reflections and stick to chart.

I am a 3rd grade teacher of 29 under-privileged children in a poverty-stricken neighborhood. My students have seen an abundance of negative activity go on throughout their neighborhood, and I would like to bring some sunshine into their daily lives. Over the summer I attended an amazing workshop discussing the responsive classroom. I left this workshop with a new prospective of how I would like to interact with my children, as well as how I would like them to interact with each other. A responsive classroom should help build confidence, self image, and academics. I am eager to use this procedure in my classroom. An important aspect of a responsive classroom is the "Morning Meeting". This amazing meeting is going to turn my classroom environment around totally. We will become more comfortable, empathetic, and kind to each other by using this method. The morning meeting has a daily message, which welcomes the students every day--and that is where the problem begins. I would like to use an easel to put chart paper on to write the messages that will greet my wonderful students. These greetings can be the best feeling for certain students that may have had a rough morning. After students read the message, they can write their thoughts on the post-it notes that I am requesting. Then they will stick them to the original morning message for discussion. If I can start my students' day with a good thought and discussion, it may last for the rest of the day, and maybe their lives. Everyone likes to feel loved, and safe. That is the intent of the messages: to build a positive sense of community throughout the classroom.
