Meet Me at the Carpet

My students need a carpet with space to sit comfortably during whole group instruction to enhance learning.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My third grade students come from a variety of socioeconomic backgrounds, with a majority of them living in poverty. Although they face these challenges at home, my students always come to school eager to learn, and strive for excellence everyday.

I teach at a Title 1 school in Arizona where 100% of our students receive free breakfast and lunch.

My classroom is a place where my students come to learn and grow in a positive, caring and safe environment. I want to give my students everything they need to be successful.

My Project

When we meet at the carpet at the front of the classroom, I often hear, "she's touching me!" or "He's not sitting in his spot." The carpet will not only solve the arguments, but it will enhance my student's learning, while also aiding in my classroom management.

Students can not be expected to stay in a desk for all of their learning needs.

With that being said, having a classroom carpet will allow for my students to move from their desk to their carpet spot for different parts of our lessons throughout the day. When at the carpet, students will be in close proximity to the whiteboard and Smartboard for lessons. All students will be strategically placed on the carpet in order to learn from one another when participating in collaborative partner talks.

As for classroom management, having a carpet will allow for my students to problem solve on their own without my discretion when conflicts arise. It will also give me the opportunity to assign students who need extra reinforcement on a behavior to sit in close proximity to myself. These students will also have the opportunity to sit next to students who can model these expected behaviors.

My goal is for my students to have a concrete space of their own where we can easily collaborate as a group and in partners without confusion or conflict.
