Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Our wonderful students come to school every day, learning English and academic subjects. They are headed towards college, the workforce, and will become leaders of tomorrow. Liberty High School Academy for Newcomers is a special place with great students!
Many of our students are refugees and also have difficult home lives.
Many live in shelters or temporary housing. Many don't get food outside of the school day, and don't have the basics we have all come to depend on like soap, toothbrushes, and deodorant.
We created a pantry at our school where students can get essential food items and basic necessities like toothpaste, toilet paper, etc. for free so they aren't pressured financially and can focus on their education. We know them and their needs well, so they trust us to share what are often difficult stories and circumstances. Last fall, we were able to raise $4990 worth of food and goods that helped our students, and their families stay on their educational path. We ask for your help again!
We identify students in need from various sources, maybe a teacher or guidance counselor notices a student is tired and finds out they aren't eating at home, or a student goes to our service partner and asks if we have any microwavable food since they can't bring food to the shelter. We take that student to our pantry and get them the things they need that will allow them to be food secure and have their basic necessities met. With this help, our students gain trust that school is a place where they can feel safe and cared for.
