Meet an Author, Make a Friend for Life

My students need 63 poetry books by New England authors. These include the works of Edgar Allen Poe, "The Pocket Emily Dickinson," and "Poetry for Young People: Robert Frost." We live in an area of the U.S.with a rich literary history, but without the poetry, students can't make friends for life.

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Luxton's classroom raised $983

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

All students should have lives enriched by literature. And, as poets of the twenty-first century, students must see their link to the poets who came before them in order to see themselves as part of the history of New England poetry.

My students are wonderfully creative, intelligent, articulate, but with anything that takes time to reach fruition, they too, need access to literature that all sixth graders should become familiar with.

In order to grow they need poetry; they need the history of poets; they need to see themselves in the continuum of poets that came before them; and to look ahead at the impact they themselves will make as contributors to modern poetry.

My Project

I teach a New England author's unit, as well as a Poetry Unit; I try to intertwine both so that students have the back story of the rich literary world that are so fortunate to be a part of. I've included some non-poetry books in the cart, but Emily Dickinson, Kerouac, Emerson, writers Thoreau and Nathaniel Hawthorne and many more, all lived in New England. I would like for my students to have the resources of these books of poetry in our classroom; these books of poetry will inspire my inner city students to be our poets of the future.

Please help me help these terrific and eager and inquisitive students gain a deeper knowledge of the poetry created in our own region.

You won't be disappointed. These are students who value literature, but don't often have access to the high quality works many suburban kids do. To bridge the achievement gap, to give these kids every opportunity to learn and experience and see poetry as the exciting medium it is, they only need the books in their hands to make this dream a reality.
