My Students

I love that my students want to learn and be successful. My students have goals and want a better life for themselves and their family. Although many of them have endured pain and despair, they hold on to hope which allows them to persist through challenging situations.

Recently, one of my students shared that her parents were separated.

Her mother decided to move in with a relative and left my student and her two siblings with their father. My student conveyed that her father is an alcoholic and that is why her mother left. She further shared that she and her brother spend their nights consoling their father because he cries all the time. Sadly, she and her brother also have to watch their father because she's afraid that he's going to hurt himself.

Even through the turmoil, my student comes to school; tired but ready to give it her all. Her story is symbolic of how resilient my students are, yet they come to school to find some resemblance of normalcy as well as support.

My Project

The yoga mats will make a difference in my students' life. During the first 10 minutes of class, students will have the option of using yoga mats as a place to sit, meditate, and participate in mindful breathing. Currently, my students are using their chairs which causes them to be uncomfortable. The yoga mats will offer comfort to my students as they are sitting on the floor. After the 10 minutes, students will be ready to learn!

It is my belief that when students clear their minds of frustrations and irritations, they will be happier and ready to receive the lesson.
