This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

On the heels of COVID, I hope to engage and inspire my students to experience the biological sciences in the medical field by enrolling in 'Medical School'. Classes in anatomy (rat dissections), patient monitoring (physiology kits), bacteriology (slides & nitrate indicators), and infectious diseases (lab case study) will lead to earning a 'degree' in medical health and knowledge and hopefully ignite my students passions for a career in the healthcare industry.

My students are credit deficient urban seniors who have chosen to not drop out, but come to our school to earn their diploma.

Most are working outside of school and appreciate learning standards in a hands-on applicable way connecting to possible future careers as this unit will do; we will be immersed in the healthcare field. By being able to offer hands-on experiences like dissecting rats, gathering and analyzing bacterial samples, measuring heart rates and blood pressure (and other physiological data), and following the spread of infectious disease through the materials I've requested, I can create a more authentic 'Medical School' experience. I hope to conduct fieldwork to local hospitals and get doctors, nurses, EMTs, and others from the healthcare industry to visit our class.
