This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is an elementary school that services students from TK to 5th grade. We are located in the middle of a diverse and dense urban community. My 3rd and 4th graders are enrolled in a Spanish Bilingual Program that maintains and enhances their native language while supporting their growth in the English language. We have a 50/50 model in which half of the day is taught in English and the other half in Spanish.

Our school is located in the heart of Los Angeles a few miles form downtown LA where bilingualism is embraced and supported.

We are a Title One school that serves low income families from different cultural backgrounds.

My Project

This selection of media literacy from Time For Kids will support our bilingual students in our Reading Workshop model. Through the workshop model we teach students how to site their text and show evidence when negotiating theories and conclusions of their text. This model helps to show students the responsibility of supporting their work with evidence. Siting evidence is a skill that will make students' arguments stronger and bullet proof against hearsay and fake news sources.

Non-fiction text help to prepare our students to be precise, use facts and to search for truth in their research of various topics.

Media literacy is still foundational in preparing students to become life long readers and learners. Informational text in its physical format through books teaches students real facts that are supported by primary sources, diagrams, timelines, photographs and so forth. Textual characteristics that we want students to transfer to their own writing. Books of various non-fiction text continue to help us prepare avid readers and strong writers. When students have more choices and an abundance of books to choose from these goals are more than possible.
