Measuring Up with STEM!

We need scientific tools to bring a measurement project to life! The fossils and skull models will allow students to handle, inquire, and manipulate as they seek accurate measurements using their scientific calipers.

About My Students

My students are amazing! Our school is an urban, public alternative school designed for kids who have not found success in traditional classrooms. Even though they have a history of academic struggles, they have unbounded enthusiasm and curiosity that shines through in the classroom!

Most students at my school qualify for free or reduced-cost school meals and have very limited financial resources. Many come from difficult situations at home, including homelessness or parents or siblings who are incarcerated. Some students have a history of health problems, while others move frequently and have switched schools multiple times.

Despite so many challenges, my students are still excited about learning and eager for meaningful experiences!

My students are working with a researcher at our local science museum and are getting to see first-hand what kind of work is done by a professional scientist. Through this project, students will develop skills in measurement and comparison, learning how to derive meaningful data from imperfect, incomplete or irregular forms. By using both familiar and advanced tools, students will extend their experiences and develop their skills.

By working in groups to make meaningful conclusions from their data, students will be engaging in the kind of problem-solving done by research teams. They will be forming their own questions, then seeking answers that are supported by evidence.

In Their Own Words

We are trying to learn how scientists measure. We will use tools we have already used before, like rulers and tape measures, and we will use tools we have not used yet, like calipers and digital measurement apps. We will measure objects with strange and irregular shapes and then look for patterns and make comparisons.

We like having a chance to be in charge of part of what we do in class. It makes the activity more interesting and more personal. When we help our teacher plan for a lesson and find everything we need, we learn more than just the science lesson. We learn about organizing and writing essays and having a budget. These are skills that will help us in our jobs.

This project helps us think like scientists! It is better when we get to ask real questions and try to find the answers ourselves, instead of just answering questions on a worksheet. It is important that we learn to answer questions and solve problems in the real world with professional tools.
