My students need wind-up meter tapes to measure distances for several outside activities including modeling measuring parallax of stars

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students want engaging, hands on learning opportunities and I want to give them as many as possible.
My students attend a high school in a high needs, urban district, with 76% of students meeting the free and reduced lunch requirements.
Our challenge is to bring them to nature or if necessary, bring nature to them.
Earth Science an elective science class. We are outside as much as possible measuring shadow lengths, distances in a solar system model, directions, angles.
My Project
Developing models is one of the goals of the Next Gen Science Standards. Students need to be outside, observing, modeling, measuring the world and its phenomena. This will allow students to study systems that can be scaled down to see patterns and cause and effect relationships. Outside activities give students the opportunity to analyze and interpret data and explore their findings.
They need good tools and these wind-up meter tapes will allow them to model the distances and position of our world and beyond.
Modeling the world can shift the overwhelming to simple and increase students' relationship to the world
