Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach 5th grade bilingual students. We are a large urban school with over 600 students, 95% of whom are of Hispanic origin. Our students' parents have come to the United States to make a better life for their families. We are a neighborhood school in an Hispanic community. The neighborhood thrives with working families, local restaurants, shops, and service centers. It is a bustling but conservative area. The neighborhood streets are alive with remodeled homes in warm southwestern colors and textures.
On December 26, 2007, our school sustained very substantial fire damage. Every book, pencil, desk, and computer was destroyed or suffered smoke damage. We are well on the way to moving back into our beloved school with new and improved materials.
Children grow. Children measure things in their life everyday. But why is it so difficult for them to perform these tasks on a standardized test? The answer may lie in the lack of supplies in the classroom.
We need the necessary measurement supplies that my students can use everyday to further their knowledge of the metric and customary systems. Measuring tapes, rulers, dry and liquid measure supplies and thermometers are needed to successfully complete this unit. Using a variety of materials will help my students to identify the differences between linear and mass measurement. The children will work in groups to create posters and data relating to each concept.
You will make it possible for my students to learn about measurement using hands-on materials that will significantly increase their understanding of this important concept. With these supplies, they will compare and contrast metric and customary units of measurement and improve their MEAP and standardized testing scores.
This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
