Measure and Grow

My students need 30 meter sticks to measure larger objects in the community garden for mathematical purposes, rather than using rulers end to end.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Have you ever tried measuring a 94-inch flower bed with just a 12-inch ruler? My students would be more successful with larger instruments for measuring to make more accurate calculations when solving math problems.

These students are trying to learn in an urban neighborhood just outside Chicago in Illinois.

My students are placed in my class as a math intervention to help boost test scores. They have two math classes a day for nine weeks, one being their core math class, the other being mine. I love to challenge them to make some math discoveries on their own. This leads to more genuine learning and students taking control of their own educations. We have a community garden next to our building that I love to incorporate into lessons as often as possible. The students love to get outdoors and are surprised by how much there is to learn outside of a textbook. Because they attend a public middle school, they are forced to learn at a faster pace than is comfortable for some due to testing requirements. Sometimes these students respond better at a slower, more independent pace. This is what I hope to have them achieve in my class.

My Project

My students struggle in the areas of measurement and geometry. Since these two are so closely related, I try to make as many hands-on lessons as possible. For some, reading a ruler is extremely difficult. Then, when I ask them to measure something longer than the 12-inch standard ruler, they get discouraged. My goal is to make each student become inspired by their own knowledge. If I can provide them with a tool, as minor as a meter stick, that will allow them to feel better about themselves, then I intend to do what I can to get these tools in their hands.

This project is extremely important to me.

For one, I am dedicated to my students and their success, both in and out of the classroom. I believe that being able to read a ruler and meter stick are life skills that they will have to know, even as adults. By finding fun and engaging ways to teach these skills, I will hopefully be able to make a difference in the lives of these students.
