Meaningfully Academic Choice Time

My students need blocks, puzzles, and big books for social studies, science, and choice time (which accounts for hours of the school day).

My Students

Our school is a high-performing public charter school located on the southeast side of Chicago. This coming school year we will be serving grades K-4, and will be adding one grade level per year until we reach K-8. 89% of our scholars qualify for free and reduced lunch, and 100% of our scholars live in the surrounding community.

The students in our kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grade classrooms are not only students: they are scholars, they are friends, they are dreamers, and they are constantly seeking out opportunities to learn and grow.

We promote growth, achievement, and strength of character within our scholars. Our school believes in the power of each and every scholar to someday change the world.

My Project

These materials will be used during science, social studies, and choice time for kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grade students. Puzzles, blocks, and oversize books encourage students who learn visually and kinetically.

Choice time is a time for kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grade students at GLA to synthesize and expand on what they have learned throughout the school day- in a way that encourages their decision-making and important voices.

While these materials will be used predominantly during these blocks of the day, they can be tied to any academic or social-emotional lesson. Blocks can be used for students to recreate a math lesson, puzzles develop students' fine-motor skills, and oversize books allow students to practice their concepts about print.
