This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are in need of a more kinesthetic way to complete Science assignments. They all have different learning styles and I feel that equipment will help target the ones who learn by doing and working with their hands. Many of the new Science curriculums (which require a great deal of enrichment as it is) are not providing hands-on activities, which means the school has to purchase them. For a low-income school like mine, the responsibility tends to fall on the teacher. There are so many different resources available such as books and laptops, but it is important for the students to use their hands to understand more abstract science concepts such as Cells and Organisms or the Human Body.
My students need hands-on materials to help them understand difficult Science concepts.
They are curious and hard-working, but lack knowledge in regards to Properties of Earth or Electricity. With the help of reusable materials such as magnets, thermometers, beakers, etc. we will be able to have workstations where students can work hands-on, independently or in a group, to complete more abstract Science activities and experiments. They will also be able to see examples of higher order thinking questions and answers.
My Project
These materials will provide my students with more hands-on learning experiences in Science. Science has become more abstract in upper elementary grades, so it is important that students have a deeper understanding of these concepts. The Science Activity Tubs provide various experiments created with important Science standards in mind. Science materials are often overlooked in elementary schools and it is important for students to be able to use tools to aid in understanding.
Students will have the opportunity to complete a variety of activities for each concept, which will further solidify their understanding and allow them to apply their Scientific knowledge in a constructive fashion.
The Science Tools will allow students to have the necessary materials to complete a variety of experiments. Some of the tools provided include microscopes and slides, different types of magnets, magnifying glasses, and measuring tapes.
These materials are especially important for fifth-grade students as they prepare for the Florida Standard Assessment in Science; the first of its kind they will have to take in elementary school. Many of the Science curriculums out there have a variety of experiments students can take part in, but rarely have any materials provided. Without this scientific equipment, it is difficult to provide students an opportunity to understand. In conclusion, the hands-on Science materials will help abstract concepts seem more concrete and help students prepare as they take more difficult science classes in the future.
