As a sophomore English teacher in a financially challenged inner-city high school, I need help bringing the world which exists beyond the local neighborhood to my students.
Test scores in my school district are habitually low on the high school level, especially in the area of writing. Every time I tried to "show" my students the steps in the Writing Process by discussion and note-taking, several students would get that "deer-in-the-headlights" look on their faces. They just didn't get it. On the two occasions that I was able to use one of two LCD projectors that my school has (population = over 1000 students), the students seemed more interested in the lesson and seemed to "get it." I could tell that their writing was better. Their writing began to look "pretty" to me. Also, their presentations were better because they took pride in knowing how to "teach" me how to use the technology. It made me feel sad to know that I could not offer that type of learning experience for them more often simply because our district could not afford to purchase more projectors.
Having an LCD projector in my classroom would allow me to give the students more challenging writing assignments and projects because I could "show" them what I needed them to produce. I could take them on virtual field trips, they could present lessons to the class based on research topics of their choice. They could even create presentations that could be used for school-wide distribution.
Your help will ensure that my students will be exposed to a world that they quite possibly would never see.
