My students need 30 dry erase learning boards, markers, and erasers.

"Please Mrs. B, call on me!"
"I know the answer, let me do it!"
"The others are too slow so let me answer again!"
Those comments are common and usually come from only a handful of my same students every day. I teach math to 7th graders in a high-need environment where sometimes simple verbal or written class participation can be overshadowed by those few who are quicker and seem to always "know" the answer. It's not that the other students don't want to try or participate, but the fact is their minds may be on something else outside of school that is affecting their concentration such as being padlocked out of their home, parents losing a job, death, divorce or just simply being hungry. Just as I am challenged with more than just "teaching", my students are challenged with more than just "learning".
I have seen that the students in my classes enjoy doing more than just taking notes or working on a worksheet for practice. They really enjoy a hands-on, fun learning environment that also gives them a chance to participate. But there are always a few who don't want to come to the board to show their work of problems or even be called on to speak in front of the class. My aim is to have all of my students participate and to show no partiality what so ever in who I call on to be given the chance to "show off".
Using individual dry erase boards with colorful markers will engage every student every time when the time comes in class for guided practice of a particular math topic. Each student will have the chance to work on their mastery of the problem and then present their solutions without having to leave their seat or even speak. This will also give me a better chance to see who is or is not grasping the understanding they need. Plus having their own whiteboard to hold up to show me their responses will also cut down on the chaos of yelling out or jumping out of seats to have me call on them one at a time. EVERYONE CAN PARTICIPATE AND HAVE FUN!
Your help with this project will ensure that every student in my 7th grade math class will feel part of the class by being able to "show off" their knowledge. It will also ensure that I am able to quickly see who might need extra help; especially those of my students who for one reason or another won't speak up.
This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
