Help me give my students their own ukulele to use in class while learning how to play songs that they know as well as creating their very own compositions.
My students are inquisitive, curious and excited about learning new things. As with many young learners, their favorite way to learn is hands-on and experiential. However, because of the nature of living in a small town with limited outside opportunities, it is incumbent upon the schools to provide as many opportunities for our students as possible. My students have a hunger for music and are like sponges when learning new things. Learning how to play a more advanced instrument would be so exciting for them!
Having an opportunity to learn by seeing, hearing and touching is a way for students to internalize content and maintain interest in and excitement about what they are learning.
As a music teacher, I want to provide as many of those opportunities as possible so that my students can play music as well as create music of their own.
My students are tremendous blessings in my life. It brings me so much joy to see them get excited about what they are learning and beg to learn more. Every day is full of wonder and potential. I would love nothing more than the opportunity to expand the experiences of these wonderful students of mine!
My Project
Music is truly a way to touch the heart - it is a universal language! I have the privilege of getting to teach music to early learners who are just embarking on their musical experiences. I want to provide them as many opportunities as possible to continue to develop a love for music that will carry on for years to come. Being able to play a "real" instrument successfully is something that will undoubtedly spur them on to bigger and better things. As of right now, my students have access to unpitched percussion instruments (rhythm stick, triangles, woodblocks, etc.) that they LOVE to play. I would love to expand their experiences to include a pitched instrument so that they could begin to recognize that music has endless possibilities.
With these ukuleles, my students will have an opportunity to put their hands on their own instrument rather than having to always wait for a turn.
This will promote whole class engagement and help them progress much more quickly than they would if they were working in rotations. We do several performances a year at my school and I can't wait for the kids to get on the stage in front of parents, friends, family and the community to show what kids are capable of doing when they have the resources available to help them shine! Thank you in advance for helping to make this dream a reality!
